Image Peter Clark is an Associate Technical Fellow in Boeing's Networked Systems Technology Organization in Seattle, WA, where he is a researcher and project leader in the areas of large knowledge-based systems, common-sense reasoning, machine inference, and natural language understanding. Among other projects he leads Boeing's involvement in Vulcan Inc's Project Halo, developing new knowledge-based technologies for advanced question-answering. He received his Ph.D in Computer Science in 1991, and has researched these topics for 20 years with more than 50 refereed publications in artificial intelligence, including a AAAI Best Paper award in 1997. He was co-chair of the Third International Conference on Knowledge Capture, held in 2005.

ImageBoeing is one of the world's leading aerospace companies and the largest manufacturer of commercial jetliners and military aircraft combined. Additionally, Boeing designs and manufactures rotorcraft, satellites, launch vehicles, advanced information and communication systems, operates the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station, and provides numerous airline support services.

Image Although "Semantic Technology" is not precisely defined, certainly technologies concerned with explicit representations of meaning have made inroads into Boeing in a variety of areas such as knowledge-based engineering, information management, and expertise management, and are considered an important element in many technology roadmaps for the future. In this short talk I will briefly summarize some of the successes and some of the obstacles (both technical and non-technical) for applying these technologies within the company.
